Understanding exterior paints does not need to be complicated, though it is important to understand that there are benefits to certain paints over others, especially in our climate. While we are happy to work with budget-friendly paints and achieve beautiful finishes with them, these paints tend to not last as long as others available to us. As our homes are subject to high sun and moisture levels throughout the year, paints that are formulated with additives to increase protection from mold, mildew, and sun-damage (color fade) typically lend the coating a longer life before needing to be recoated. With any paint you choose, color selection is essentially unlimited, though more vibrant colors fade quicker than subtle, less intense colors.

Exterior Staining
Like many Rocky Mountain destinations, homes in the greater Park City area commonly rely on exterior wood stain to both color and protect their wood siding and trim. The stain products that we routinely use vary in transparency levels based on how much pigment they contain, giving us the ability to fine-tune the end result based on your exact preferences. The four transparency options that we work with, in order of most transparent to most opaque, are: Transparent, Semi-Transparent, Semi-Solid, and Solid. Solid stains look and act very similar to standard paint in that they fully cover the natural wood grain, although their adhesion to raw wood is typically better than paints and does not necessitate a primer. The other transparency options, relative to their pigment levels, leave the natural wood grain visible. Color options are nearly endless, as we are able to custom-match our stains to any color you prefer, though the more transparent the stain, the more the color can be impacted by the base color of the wood substrate.
